Separate the package from the product

A mattress fitting the room does not prove that its package can reach it. The National Bed Federation advises telling the retailer about restricted access such as narrow stairs and tight corners. Ask for the packaged dimensions of the exact product and the delivery arrangements that apply to the order.

Keep the assembled product dimensions on a separate line. A frame may arrive in several packages, while another item may be delivered in a different form. Do not assume the delivery method from a showroom display or a photograph of a completed bed. The actual package and service information should come from the seller.

Describe the route in sequence

Write down each stage between the delivery point and the bedroom: entrance, hallway, stairs, landing and final doorway, as relevant to the property. Measure the restrictions that the delivery provider asks about and describe turns or fixed obstructions clearly. A list in route order is easier to discuss than a collection of unlabelled numbers.

This is not a geometric guarantee that a bulky object will pass. Complex turns, unusual stairs or uncertain measurements may require an assessment by the provider. Ask how access problems are handled before purchase, and avoid promising that an item can be carried through a route based only on a two-dimensional sketch.

Clarify the service level

Check whether the quoted service covers the threshold, a chosen room, assembly or removal of an old item. Do not assume that one of those tasks is included because another is offered. Record any preparation requirements and restrictions in the same note as the delivery date.

John Lewis's beds guide distinguishes different frame and base constructions, which may create different assembly questions. Use the exact product and service description to establish what arrives and who completes the work. The slatted-base photograph illustrates a component of a bed, not a promise about the assembly service attached to your purchase.

Budget for confirmed extras

In a hypothetical order, the mattress costs £400, delivery £35 and an optional removal service £25. The total is £460. If removal is not needed, the assumed total is £435. These are invented amounts for organising a quotation, not current retailer prices or a statement that those services are always available.

Mark each service as included, extra, unavailable or awaiting confirmation. Keep the written quotation with the product specification so that the complete cost can be checked before payment. A low product price does not settle the practical cost of getting the item into the intended room.

Follow product-specific handling instructions

Do not improvise bending, rolling or unpacking methods to solve an access problem. The National Bed Federation's care guidance emphasises appropriate handling and manufacturer instructions. The delivery provider and exact product documentation should settle what is permitted for the item you have ordered.

Allow an illustrative 15 minutes to collect route information and another 15 to confirm the service details: 30 minutes of preparation in this example. Difficult access may need substantially more work. Keep the final agreement accessible on delivery day, and report any change in the route or property arrangements before the vehicle arrives.
